College hopes to raise public footprint with annual festival
— Several Cecil College programs will link up Saturday to host a music and arts festival at Elkton Station.
This marks the second annual “Falling Leaves Music, Arts and Wellness Festival,” which will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. as a sort of open house for the college. It’s organized by the Lifelong Learning Department, the program for music and performing arts and the program for fine arts.
“We have a lot of artistic value … in the town of Elkton,” said Shawn Markey, director of the
Lifelong Learning Department. “This is a great way to showcase it, to begin the year. Just to show everybody what we have available and to let them see for themselves what a nice building this is.”
For the price of admission — $5 for those 11 and older — visitors will have the opportunity to browse work from a slew of local artists and artisans, peruse the goods of more than 30 vendors and enjoy live music throughout the day. They’ll also have the chance to take part in a number of workshops, each costing $10 and ranging from topics like wax sculpting to tips on increasing one’s psychic ability. Food, beer, wine and soft drinks will be available.
The festival is designed as a family event, with several activities for children, including an inflatable slide, pumpkin painting and youth-focused workshops. According the Markey, the college wants to further promote a message of community worth by way of this festival.
Throughout the year, the location runs summer camps, a youth theater program and classes for just about any instrument you can imagine, and organizers there want county residents to know they can take advantage of these opportunities.
Saturday’s affairs will take place both inside and outside the building, but Markey said the weather wouldn’t be an issue. Forecasts predict a sunny Saturday with highs in the midto high-60s.
“We’re just looking to have a great day,” Markey said. “Even if it’s a little chilly outside, we have a great atmosphere inside.”
