Perryville hopes to extend streak into postseason
The Perryville boys’ soccer team will look to carry the momentum of a four-game winning streak into the postseason.
The Panthers earned the top seed in a 1A North Region Section I Boys’ Soccer Tournament with a 7-5 overall record and will host fourth-seeded Joppatowne (4-8-1) on Tuesday. The Mariners advanced with a 1-0 win over Havre de Grace in the opening round.
“We finished the season on a real strong note,” Perryville coach Dan Kiesl said. “We’re passing well, we’re shooting well and they’re really working together as a team.”
The Panthers’ four consecutive wins to wrap up the regular season included a 3-0 triumph over the Mariners on Oct. 17.
“They were down one of their strongest players, so that gave us a little bit of a boost. I expect it to be a much tighter game this time around,” Kiesl said. “We need to make sure our defense stays solid overall, play our positions, pass and work as a team, and take as many shots on goal as possible.”
Bohemia Manor (5-7) faces a taller task when it travels to second-seeded Patterson Mill (6-6-1) at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The Eagles won their season finale, 4-3, over Joppatowne, but have not played since Oct. 19.
The Huskies finished with a 6-7-1 overall record while competing in the upper Chesapeake Division.
The two teams did not meet in the regular season, but face a handful of common opponents. Both squads defeated Elkton in the regular season, but Bo Manor lost to Havre de Grace by a goal, which Patterson Mill defeated 3-1. The Eagles also suffered a 4-1 loss to Rising Sun, an upperdivision squad that the Huskies handled 10-1.
