Remember our veterans
Honoring our veterans … It seems like a simple thing to do, but all too often this holiday is lost by the anticipated excitement of the upcoming holiday and election season.
I encourage you to take a few moments and reflect on the greater reason for Veterans Day and to thank and honor our military heroes who served to protect our great nation.
In observance of Veterans Day, The Cecil Whig is proud to publish a special bonus edition 100 percent dedicated to some of our local, military personnel and their stories. This commemorative issue will be delivered on Saturday to all Cecil Whig home subscribers as part of their current subscription. Copies will also be available at all our normal newsstand locations around the county. In this edition, you will find stories about … The efforts of thousands of U.S. Naval Training Center Bainbridge veterans to remembder the importance of the Port Deposit facility. The impact that a new VA holistic health program is having to soothe the pain that veterans return home with. How Perryville is remembering the sacrifice of local heroes in a renewed public campaign. How Freedom Hills Therapeutic Riding Program has made serving veterans a standpoint part of its program. How veterans service organizations are refocusing their efforts to gain new members returning home from overseas duty. This Veterans Day edition is another part of our “Tributes Program” we launched in 2014 to showcase, honor and thank all those who serve our country. For 175 years, the Cecil Whig has been privileged to serve our local community and honored to do our part by giving back.
This Veterans Day edition is one way we can continue that role, but we wanted to take it a step further because we care. We will be donating a portion of all newsstand proceeds to the Lance Cpl. Gregory S. Copenhaver Marine Corps League Detachment No. 1098, which support veterans and the community at large through a variety of efforts, including most visibly in its “Toys for Tots” campaign.
Remembering and recognizing shouldn’t be a once-ayear thing, at least not in our minds. What these local heroes did for our country is amazing and we salute and thank each of them for their service to our country. We ask you to join us in this celebration and we thank you in advance if you decide to assist our efforts by picking up a copy of this commemorative edition.
Have a safe and happy Veterans Day! David Fike, Cecil Whig President
