In accordance with the premiere of a new movie set in the Harry Potter universe this weeK — “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” — the great people at the Cecil County Public Library have pieced together a few like-minded reads that might strike your palette as familiar.

Books not enough? Check out one (or all) of CCPL’s Potter-themed events this week.

Fantasy Marco and Celia are the most powerful illusionists in the world. Trained from childhood by overbearing masters, they are trapped in a lifelong battle to prove their skills. The battleground is the night circus — a mysterious festival of contortionists, tents, vendors and ringmasters that travels around the world, appearing in a new town every few nights without warning. As Marco and Celia compete through the years, circus-goers begin to question whether the magic of the night circus is really an illusion. Science fiction/Fantasy On her 19th birthday, Kelsea Raleigh must come out of hiding. As the rightful queen of the Tearling Empire, she faces assassination attempts from her enemies and cruel judgment from her assigned guards on her journey to the keep. Kelsea must learn to govern a kingdom of people that she is only beginning to understand, and she must do so while surviving the Red Queen of Mortmesne’s jealous wrath. This book is the exciting start to an epic trilogy. Plus, rumors are that our very own Hermione Granger, Emma Watson, is set to produce and star in a film adaptation in the coming years. Detective/Mystery Although this series, written by J.K. Rowling under the pseudonym of Robert Galbraith, is thematically very different than our beloved Harry Potter, the magic is alive in Rowling’s writing and characters. Based squarely in the real world, this crime thriller feels like a modern Sherlock Holmes. It follows the career of British P.I. Cormoran Strike and his assistant Robin in their investigation of a celebrity’s death. Although this first book in the Cormoran Strike series lacks the wizarding world of Hogwarts, it is nonetheless a great choice for Harry Potter fans.
