Elk­ton man gets 45 days for 45 bags of heroin

— A man caught in down­town Elk­ton with 45 bag­gies of heroin in April has re­ceived a 45-day jail term af­ter ac­cept­ing a plea deal, ac­cord­ing to Ce­cil County Cir­cuit Court records.

Ce­cil County Cir­cuit Court Judge Jane Cairns Mur­ray im­posed a max­i­mum four-year sen­tence on the de­fen­dant, Ma­lik Ste­wart, 20, of the 100 block of Quail Court in Elk­ton, on Mon­day and then sus­pended all but 45 days of it, court records show.

Ste­wart, who pleaded guilty to pos­ses­sion of heroin, also was or­dered to serve three years of su­per­vised pro­ba­tion.

April 19 af­ter Elk­ton Po­lice Depart­ment Ofc. Gabriel Ri­molo spot­ted him lean­ing against a parked car while pa­trolling in the 200 block of Dou­glas Street and — fa­mil­iar with Ste­wart and aware that he was wanted on a bench war­rant — the of­fi­cer took him into cus­tody, po­lice said.

Af­ter ar­rest­ing Ste­wart on the war­rant charg­ing him with fail­ure to ap­pear for court in an un­re­lated case, po­lice added, Ri­molo searched Ste­wart and found a plas­tic sand­wich bag hold­ing 45 pack­ets of heroin and $245.

The heroin was wrapped in four “bun­dles” held to­gether with rub­ber bands, and each bun­dle con­tained 12 to 13 small zi­plock bag­gies of heroin, po­lice re­ported.
