Del. man killed in I-95 crash
Accident involved box truck
— A Delaware man was killed in a two-vehicle crash on southbound Interstate 95 on Friday morning, police reported.
Maryland State Police identified the deceased man as Joseph Maddams Jr., 33, of Wilmington, Del.
Maddams was driving an Isuzu box truck at about 8:50 a.m. on Friday when a Toyota Camry struck the truck in the rear, causing it to skid off the road into the median, reported Cpl. Alan Flaugher, of the JKF Barrack in Perryville. The box truck then overturned and Maddams was ejected from the vehicle.
Both vehicles were traveling in the same lane when the accident happened, police said.
Maddams was treated at the scene and transported to Christiana Hospital in Christiana, Del., by a Maryland State Police medevac helicopter, Flaugher said. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The driver of the passenger vehicle, Michael Fraser, 20, of Arlington, Va., refused medical treatment at the scene of the accident, Flaugher reported.
Helen Ross, of Weston, Fla., came upon the scene seconds after it happened and before any emergency vehicles had arrived. Ross had left the Philadelphia area early Friday morning after visiting friends and was on her way home to Florida
when she arrived at the aftermath.
“I wanted to see if I could help and I wasn’t alone,” Ross said. “Several people approached to give aid.”
Ross described kneeling next to the man who was not conscious.
“I just held his hand and rubbed his back,” she said. “I want his family to know he was not alone.”
After Ross gave a written statement to the police and after the helicopter left, she finally left the scene.
“I was hoping he’d make it,” she said.
The crash, which happened at mile marker 106.4, shut down all lanes of southbound I- 95 between Elkton and North East as state police landed the helicopter. Traffic backed up for miles reportedly into Delaware, and caused major congestion in alternative routes.
Traffic resumed normal operation around noon Friday.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing, Flaugher reported. No charges have been filed at this time.
