Limo rides for newborns run in this family
— It’s not every day that a mother gets to bring her newborn son home from the hospital in a limousine driven by the same person who drove her home from the hospital 24 years ago, but that’s exactly what happened earlier this month.
Thanks to Katrina Douglas’ father, Rodney “Butch” Douglas, a Rising Sun resident, who happens to be a little bit sentimental, a new family tradition may be underway.
“Back in 1992, when my wife Toni and I brought Katrina home from Harford Memorial Hospital in a limo, it was so special, I decided to do the same thing for my first grandchild,” Douglas said.
He wasted no time in call-
ing About Town Limousine, a North East limo company that provided the first ride for Katrina, to reserve service for a yet-to-be-determined date for Katrina’s first child.
“I also requested the same driver that we had 24 years ago, if she was still available,” Douglas said.
Carol Gerhart, owner of About Town Limo, told Douglas she could arrange that since the driver was Kirsten Gerhart, who is Carol’s daughter.
Gerhart said it was the “highlight of my year,” noting the gap of 24 years before reuniting with this family made it very special. And Kirsten was happy to do her part as well.
“Of course, I wanted to drive for them,” Kirsten said. “There’s so much sadness in the world lately; this was a chance to be part of something happy.” Finally, the day arrived. Dalen Vance Rogaskie was born at Christiana Hospital at 7:05 p.m. Nov. 4, weighing 7 pounds 5 ounces and measuring 21 inches.
“We were put on alert,” Carol Gerhart said, adding that the pickup date was confirmed for Sunday, Nov. 6.
A total of seven family members, including Butch “Grandpa” Douglas, accompanied Dalen on his first ride home that Sunday, including some of the same family members that made the journey 24 years earlier when Katrina came home.
“I’m so grateful that my dad did that for us,” Katrina Douglas said, speaking for Dalen’s father, Ricky Rogaskie, and herself. “I had wanted our son to come home in a limo the way I got to. It was even more special that it was the same driver.”
