North East kicks off hol­i­day sea­son with an­nual tree light­ing

A lit­tle be­fore 6 p.m. Fri­day, North East Mayor Robert McKnight led a count­down at the town’s an­nual tree light­ing. Af­ter “one,” the jolly, bearded fel­low who had joined McKnight

in front of a crowd of about 100 turned the tree’s lights on, to cheers and ap­plause.

Soon af­ter, peo­ple flocked to the base of the tree for pic­tures.

“It’s kind of like a Hall­mark Christ­mas movie, you know? Where ev­ery­body comes to a small town,” said Roger Nies­man, an Illi­nois res­i­dent vis­it­ing lo­cal fam­ily with his wife Kathy and grand­daugh­ter Tabitha.
