North East kicks off holiday season with annual tree lighting

A little before 6 p.m. Friday, North East Mayor Robert McKnight led a countdown at the town’s annual tree lighting. After “one,” the jolly, bearded fellow who had joined McKnight
in front of a crowd of about 100 turned the tree’s lights on, to cheers and applause.
Soon after, people flocked to the base of the tree for pictures.
“It’s kind of like a Hallmark Christmas movie, you know? Where everybody comes to a small town,” said Roger Niesman, an Illinois resident visiting local family with his wife Kathy and granddaughter Tabitha.
