U.S. 301 work to close Warwick-area road
— Drivers in the southern county will be without one rural U.S. Route 301 access road starting this week as work progresses on a bypass highway.
The intersection of Strawberry Lane and U.S. Route
301 will be closed at 9 a.m. Thursday so that a new overpass bridge can be constructed in the area, according to the Delaware Department of Transportation. Strawberry Lane becomes Wilson Street when it crosses into Maryland, and Wilson Street is the main intersectional road with Route 282 that creates the village of Warwick.
The closure will remain in effect for about a year as work is completed on the new overpass.
Traffic accessing the east side of Strawberry Lane will follow Levels Road, or Delaware Route 15, to Strawberry Lane. Traffic accessing the west side of Strawberry Lane will be forced to travel Route 282 into Warwick.
Following the completion of the overpass, most traffic patterns will be dramatically different than how they appear now.
Once completed, Strawberry Lane will still be able to access the existing U.S. 301, which officials aim to make a local traffic road while diverting commuters and long-distance drivers to the bypass, via a new road. Drivers on Route 282 will no longer directly connect to U.S. 301, however, and will instead be forced to travel a little bit farther north to a new interchange at Levels Road, near the Amazon distribution facility. There, they can either access downtown Middletown, Del., or the tolled bypass.
Meanwhile, southern county residents who work or shop in neighboring Delaware will also have to contend with a number of nighttime road closures on U.S. 301 between Marl Pit and Old School House roads for the movement of construction material necessary to build another overpass bridge.
That stretch of the heavily traveled highway will be closed from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday nights. On Friday and Saturday, the closures will start at 10 p.m. and last until 7 a.m.
These closures will detour traffic to Boyd’s Corner Road to U.S. Route 13, to Marl Pit Road and back to U.S. 301.
Crews are preparing to close Strawberry Lane in Delaware, which is a U.S. Route 301 access road from Warwick, this week in order to build an overpass bridge.
