To yet another tragic loss of life on county roads this year — and at a familiar location. Michael Sean Douglas Sweeney, 29, of Elkton, was killed in a crash in the 3000 block of Old Elk Neck Road, southwest of Elkton, on Tuesday night. It is at least the 16th traffic-related death in the county this year. The scene of the fatal crash is also where numerous others have occurred through the years, including two last year, and county officials have sought to remedy the situation. The Cecil County Sheriff’s Office and the State Highway Administration tested the road surface this past spring after they received “complaints from residents in that area” about the surface on that portion of road, especially after it rains. Then the roads division of the Cecil County Department of Public Works completed a “micro-surfacing” project, where workers applied a “coarse” material to about 1 mile of Old Elk Neck Road between Jones Chapel Road and Justice Way, to improve traction. We’re not sure whether traction played a part in this tragic crash, but we hope that officials examine what more can be done to make that stretch of road safer to all who travel it.
