Rising Sun adds new merchandise to ‘Back the Blue’ campaign
RISING SUN — At Tuesday night’s town meeting, Police Chief Francis “Chip” Peterson launched the latest additions to the “Back the Blue” items being sold at Rising Sun Town Hall.
A year ago, the department began selling “Back the Blue” T-shirts. Proceeds from the shirts went toward the Shop With A Cop Cecil County and the town’s annual Salute to Law Enforcement/First Responders breakfast.
Now there is also a window cling and a magnet with the same message and support. Both 3-inch circles carry the Rising Sun Police Department shield and “Back The Blue.” While the shirts sell for $20, the clings are $2 and the magnets go for $3. Peterson said proceeds of these new additions will be used differently.
“These help offset the cost of public promotions and information campaigns,” he said.
Rising Sun has held three of the breakfasts so far, inviting police, EMS and firefighters to the table for free pancakes, waffles, bacon, coffee and more.
Signing a proclamation declaring January 2015 as “Support Our Police Month” the mayor and commissioners — led by thenCommissioner Jennifer Scully — hosted the first breakfast at the conclusion. It has since become an annual event in town hall with donations of food and manpower.
Merchandise sales will help cover costs, Peterson said.
A new box of shirts recently arrived, Mayor Travis Marion said. Included in that shipment are larger sizes, including 2XL.
Meanwhile, the magnets and window clings were ordered in small batches to gauge public reception. If the first batch get snapped up, it’s likely more would be ordered, he said.
