Boy Scout Troop 143 sponsored by Hopewell United Methodist Church in Port Deposit recently completed their long-planned High Adventure Scouting trip to Boy Scout Sea Base at Mile Marker 23.8 in the Florida Keys. They spent a week, from July 18 to 34, at Big Munson Island after rowing 6 miles to get there.

The boys arrived and took a swim test, drew scuba gear and then rowed out in war canoes 6 miles to Big Munson Island where there was no freshwater, no clocks or watches allowed, no electricity and no cellphones or any modern conveniences.

The Scouts had to carry in all their food and water through 4-foot surf for the week adventure. While on the island, the boys went snorkeling, conducted island tours of the key islands and the unique ecology, took a deep sea ocean fishing trip, night snorkeled, took a day trip to Looe Key and snorkeled on a world class reef, slept in hammocks, played various games and held a cobbler cookoff, swam, canoed through a mangrove swamp, shark fished, and generally did island things for a week with no showers or freshwater.

Among the animals they saw were the endangered Key deer, which frequented their sleeping area and at times even bumped into sleeping Scouts in hammocks trying to get to the freshwater (there is none on the island), and also various maritime sea birds, barracuda, snappers, and all sorts of reef fish, a few kinds of sharks, stingrays, tarpon, sea turtles, blackfin tuna, and mahi mahi, which they cooked and ate one night for dinner.

Scouts and leaders who participated included (left to right) Paul “PJ” Macatee, David Nolan, Eric Jordan, Aiden House, Brian Page, Chris Sullivan, Zack Barr, Vladimir Hubbs, Dillon Nolan, Eric House, Rylan House, Kyle Gillis, James Page, Taylor House, Sean Nolan, and Jacob Ashley from Troop 143.
