8 p.m. on FX A Wilder­ness of Er­ror

Based on a best­selling book of the same ti­tle by film­maker and author Er­rol Mor­ris, this new five-part true-crime do­cuseries from Emmy-win­ning pro­ducer Marc Smer­ling re­vis­its one of the most note­wor­thy crimes of the lat­ter 20th cen­tury: the 1970 mur­ders of Army sur­geon Jef­frey MacDon­ald’s wife and two young daugh­ters. MacDon­ald stead­fastly in­sisted the killings were com­mit­ted by hip­pies in­spired by Charles Man­son, but he was con­victed of the mur­ders him­self and is serv­ing a life sen­tence. The first three episodes air here, fol­lowed by the fi­nal two on Oct. 2.

8 p.m. on MAX Movie: John Wick: Chap­ter 3 — Para­bel­lum

This third en­try in the Keanu Reeves ac­tion thriller fran­chise was the most suc­cess­ful to date, both in terms of box-of­fice rev­enue and crit­i­cal praise for the screen­play and per­for­mances. The story picks up just one hour af­ter the events of the sec­ond “Wick” film and finds the ex-hit­man ti­tle char­ac­ter on the run for his life, pur­sued by le­gions of as­sas­sins eye­ing the $14 mil­lion con­tract placed on his head for his re­cent ac­tions. Ian McShane, Mark Da­cas­cos, Lau­rence Fish­burne, Halle Berry and An­jel­ica Hus­ton also star.

9 p.m. on WMPB WHYY Great Per­for­mances

The new episode “Now Hear This: The Schu­bert Gen­er­a­tion” uses the trag­i­cally brief life of com­poser Franz Schu­bert — who com­posed 1,500 works with­out hav­ing his ge­nius rec­og­nized un­til af­ter his death at age 31 — as a jump­ing off point for a look at what it takes for a young classical artist to make it to­day in the 21st cen­tury. Host Scott Yoo goes to sev­eral of the world’s mu­sic cap­i­tals to meet ris­ing mu­sic stars and play from Schu­bert’s vast cat­a­log of mas­ter­works.
