› of North Carolina will show her jewelry, which reflects her love of mokume gane, a 17th-century Japanese art form that means “wood pattern metal.” In mokume gane, precious metals, such as sterling silver and copper, are bonded into a single piece that is then worked into beautiful patterns.

According to her artist statement, she became interested in “metal stuff ” as a teenager while assisting her father in the repair and maintenance of her cars and motorcycles. Courses at the West Surrey College of Art and Design provided further instruction in handcrafting metal objects at various scales.

After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in 1992, Metcalfe spent most of her creative time working on architectural ironwork projects. She began on a smaller scale after assisting in a mokume gane workshop at the Appalachian Center for Crafts in 2001.

She will be on-site from 10 a.m.
