River Gallery reception honors Kessler, Olszewski

Chattanooga Times Free Press - ChattanoogaNow - - ARTS - STAFF REPORT

A reception is set for Friday, Feb. 2, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at River Gallery, 400 E. Second St., to mark the opening of the February exhibit featuring artists Michael Kessler and Steve Olszewski.

Layers of color draw viewers deeper into Kessler’s geometric paintings. By applying several layers of paint with self-adapted, trowel-like tools, the artist reveals organic and geometric structures. Kessler says the paintings are not about “some hidden narrative, they are about what you see.”

Michigan sculptor Olszewski has always been drawn to clay. He got his start sculpting model automobiles for General Electric, but now his work reflects his own ideas.

Olszewski’s raku clay figures are hand-built and designed to be meditative and pensive. His teacher, Robert Pipenburg, an author on the process of raku firing, is responsible for his choice of firing technique.
