A new radio gig for Cody McCarver

Cody McCarver is the first to tell you that life has not only gotten better, but taken quite a few turns he never saw coming since the day several years ago he stepped off the Confederate Railroad tour bus and decided he needed to make some changes.

McCarver has nothing but good things to say about Railroad frontman Danny Shirley; that it was his own relationship with Jack Daniel’s that got him into trouble. Or, more specifically, that led him down a lonely, dead-end path.

He quit drinking and turned things over to God. Since then, he’s recorded several solo records, acted in several movies (“Billy the Kid,” “Cole Younger” and “The War Riders” among them), created a new musical genre called “Outlaw Gospel” (think raw country music about Jesus and doing the right thing) and became a radio show co-host.

The radio gig is fairly new, and it’s a mash-up of pretty much everything that McCarver has been doing up to this point. It’s called “The Big Revival” and it airs on WOGT-FM 107.9 Nash Icon. He does the show, which airs Sunday mornings from 9 to 11 a.m., with Dodger.

The two play music, of course, but they also have guests, usually people McCarver has some sort of personal connection with either through music or acting, or both. John Schneider, Jason Crabb and John Anderson have been guests.

What’s interesting, and what seems to Barry Courter work for fans, is that it’s not like many other faith- oriented music shows. Oftentimes on other shows, the guests are known strictly for their faith- based music, or they focus just on gospel or contemporary Christian music.

McCarver says they have guests that might be known more as a country artist, for example, but who have recorded one or two faithbased songs. Or, they might come on and play their favorite country Christian songs.

“I’ve never done anything like this,” he says. “Never thought I would be doing anything like this, but people tell me they like it, and I’m having fun.”

Carson was on the show from 2011 to 2016 along with Luther Masingill, but spent the last two years as the marketing director for CBL’s retail properties.
