The Mindy Project star and creator follows her movie role in A Wrinkle in Time with Ocean’s 8 (June 8), which co-stars Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Rihanna and Helena Bonham Carter, among others. Kaling, 38, plays Amita, a jeweler who is recruited by Debbie Ocean (Bullock) for a brazen heist at the glitzy Met Gala at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art.

What leads Amita into a life of crime?

She lives with her mom; her older sister got married and is the apple of the family’s eye, and Amita’s mom is on her case all the time!

Have you ever been to the Met Gala?

I have. I love fashion. But I feel like it’s very mysterious to the public. This movie gives you an eye into what actually happens.

This is your second movie (after A Wrinkle in Time) with a mostly female cast. What was that like?

I don’t remember what it’s like to act with men anymore! Between Reese [Witherspoon], Oprah [Winfrey], Sandra [Bullock], Cate Blanchett, Rihanna and Helena Bonham Carter, I’ve made my entire movie career without acting with men. Acting with powerful Oscar-winning actresses is a very fun gig.

You’re a new mom. How’s that going?

My daughter [Katherine, nearly 6 months old] is still so little. Every three hours in the middle of night, she wakes up. If she’s hungry, I’m out of bed feeding her. There’s no style to my parenting right now. It’s just keeping her happy.
