First Light (Vin­tage), $15, by Charles Bax­ter “Bax­ter reels back­ward in time to show a brother and sis­ter’s es­trange­ment. I was so blown away by this tech­nique, I swore one day I’d write a book in re­verse. And that turned out to be Spark of Light.”

Bridge of Clay (Knopf, avail­able Oct. 9), $26, by Markus Zusak “I fell in love with this man’s writ­ing in The

Book Thief, and af­ter 10 long years, he wnally has re­leased an­other novel. It’s gor­geous, plain and sim­ple.”
