Tour marks birthday of ‘Rock of Chickamauga’
A 90-minute caravan tour starting at 1 p.m. Sunday, July 31, at Chickamauga Battlefield will focus on “The Rock of Chickamauga” and how the inherently strong convictions and loyalties of Union Maj. Gen. George Thomas assisted in the outcome of the Battle of Chickamauga. The program is being held in conjunction with the 200th anniversary of Thomas’ birth and will include sites of his headquarters on the battlefield. During the Battle of Chickamauga, as the right wing of the Union Army collapsed, the Union left wing, under Thomas’ command, held strong. Throughout the afternoon, Thomas provided the leadership needed to hold off a multitude of Confederate assaults and to calmly withdraw the remainder of the Army of the Cumberland as nightfall approached. Participants should meet at the Visitor Center, 3370 LaFayette Road in Fort Oglethorpe. For more information, call 706-866-9241 or 423-821-7786.
