Black bear populations in Tennessee have been rebounding since the 1970s. Adult bears can be 3 feet tall at the shoulder and 6 feet in length, and can vary greatly in weight — ranging between 125 and 600 pounds for adults — depending on availability of food and time of year. Females are generally smaller. Black bears have average eyesight, fantastic hearing and what is thought to be one of the best noses in the animal kingdom. Their sense of smell is 100 times greater than humans and seven times greater than a bloodhound, and they can run up to 30 mph for short distances.
