Buddy Gross wins Toho tournament
Buddy Gross of Chickamauga, Georgia, completed his second FLW Tour victory Sunday with a five-bass limit totaling 23 pounds, 12 ounces out of Lake Toho in central Florida. That gave him a four-day haul of 85-12 and $102,700. Floridians John Cox and Darrell Davis were second and third with 81-2 and 78-7, good for $30,600 and $25,000. “I’m ecstatic. It has been an awesome, awesome journey,” Gross said in an FLW release. “To beat the competition that we have — it’s unbelievable.”
BASKETBALL
› The Sewanee men won 60-57 but the women lost 69-56 in their SAA basketball home games Sunday against Oglethorpe after losing 87-80 to the Berry women and 69-63 to the Berry men Friday night. Bella Taylor had 33 points and Kinsley Logan and Ellie Treanton scored 19 and 18 Friday. Sunday, Taylor and Logan had 13 and 11 points and Treanton nine rebounds, and
Sue Kim had seven assists to move within six of the program career record. Taylor rose to third in career points at 1,569. Luke Smith scored 21 for the Sewanee men (18-6, 7-6), after he, Cam Caldwell and Hunter Buescher scored 20, 19 and 17 Friday.
› Lee University split its Gulf South doubleheader Saturday at West Alabama, the 25th-ranked Lady Flames romping 74-38 behind Jenna Scoggins’ 5-of-7 3-point shooting and career-high 21 points but the men falling 79-70 to the first-place Tigers (18-5, 13-3). Colton Blevins and Ryan Montgomery each scored 17 and Quay Kennedy and
Cody Jones added 13 and 12 for the Flames (12-11, 9-6). Lindsey Roddy, Taylor Boggess and Haley Schubert had 13, 12 and 11 points for the Lee women (18-5, 12-3).
› The 13th-ranked Bryan College women are going to the NAIA Division II national tournament for the third year in a row after sealing their second successive AAC regular-season title with a 68-64 win Saturday at No. 22 Milligan (22-5, 20-3). The 24th straight win for the Lady Lions (25-1, 23-0) included 19 points from Shayla Ludy, 14 from To’Nesha Allison, 11 from Deandra Luna and 10 from Amber Levi. The Bryan men (13-13, 10-10) lost 81-75, but Keaton Dotson hit six 3s in scoring 21 points, EJ Bush had 17 plus 12 rebounds and Isaiah McClain scored 14.
› Three players scored 20 points as Covenant College won 87-81 at Piedmont and clinched its first men’s basketball regular-season championship since 1964, in this case the USA South’s West Division.
Bailey Spragg had 10 assists and eight rebounds with his 20 for the Scots (16-7, 15-1), Mitchell Hollis made six 3s in his and Will Crumly was 7-of-9 with three 3s. The Lady Scots (10-15, 7-9) won 58-55 at home against LaGrange with 17 points, eight rebounds and six steals from Kaley Hallmark and 13 points from Bekah Walter. They will open USAS tournament play Wednesday at Huntingdon.
› Dalton State is 15-10, 10-7 in the SSAC, after Saturday’s 77-65 home win over Blue Mountain. Sean Chislom had 19 points and eight rebounds and Malik Pugh scored 14 points for the Roadrunners, while Sean Cranney dealt eight assists. Chattanooga native Da’Juonta Ross had 21 points and seven rebounds for the Mississippi team.
› Chattanooga State swept its TCCAA doubleheader at Cleveland State, 59-47 for the Lady Tigers and 78-70 for the Tigers, who got 32 points and six assists from
