Changes coming in Alabama marriage licenses
The Alabama Legislature during the 2015 general session made significant changes to the amount and distribution of fees charged for a marriage license in Alabama. HB320 (now known as Alabama Act 2015-493*) mandates an increase of $30 to the current charge for a marriage license in every county in the state. The new law also creates the Domestic Violence Trust Fund that will collect the new charges for use in assisting victims of domestic violence.
As a result of the changes explained above beginning Jan. 1, 2016, a marriage license and associated documents in Cherokee County will cost $81.
*The specific Code of Alabama section that was changed that included the fee increase is Ala. Code 30-6-11.
