Cedar Bluff’s Carpenter earns 600th career win
Sports Editor milestone victory.
“There’s probably 600 people or more who are involved with that, even all the way back to Ragland,” Carpenter said. “I’m just blessed to be able to stay in it as long as I have. There are a lot of people who don’t do that anymore.
“Instead of moving around where the athletes were, I think I’m blessed to have stayed at two schools, taking what’s come through our doors. Without the players, the assistant coaches and the administrative support, then it’s just a number. It’s nothing I’ve done. I just happen to be the one sitting right in front (on the bench).”
Coosa Christian coach Richard Hollingsworth called Carpenter’s accomplishment “astronomical.”
“He’s steady. He does such a fantastic job. He knows how to win, and he knows how to get his kids ready to win,” Hollingsworth said. “I think Joe would tell you he shares a lot of credit, but he certainly knows what he’s doing.”
Hollingsworth and the Lady Conquerors (88, 3-3) made Carpenter earn his latest milestone. They slowed the pace for much of the first half. Cedar Bluff led 8-5 at the end of the first quarter and 24-16 at halftime.
But in the third quarter, the Lady Tigers found their rhythm and put the game out of reach. They outscored Coosa Christian 19-5 in the third quarter to take a 43-21 advantage.
“Their game plan was not to let us fast break,” Carpenter said. “When they got us in slowdown mode, they sped up and caught us napping a couple of times. They took it to us in the first half. I told them we’ve got to go back out and impose our will back on them. We kind of got in gear a little bit, and once we got going, it was downhill for us.”
Lexi Moten added 11 points for the Lady Tigers. Alexis Smith contributed seven points, eight boards and seven steals. Hannah Cosby also added seven points. Kiana Dobbins and Ollina McClellan both finished with five points.
Claire Davidson led the Lady Conquerors with nine points. Samara Brewster finished with seven points.
Cedar Bluff basketball coach Joe Carpenter earned his 600th career win on Jan. 12 in the Lady Tigers’ 59-30 victory against Coosa Christian.
