Piedmont blanks Cedar Bluff in battle of ranked baseball teams
OXFORD — Taylor Morrow and Derrick Baer combined for a one-hit shutout in leading Class 3A No. 10 Piedmont to a 12-0 baseball win over Class 1A, No. 1 Cedar Bluff on Thursday in Oxford.
Morrow surrendered the lone Tiger hit to Dakota Dobbins in the first inning. He also walked Trinton Clifton and struck out three in his 3 2/3 innings of work. Baer held the Tigers hitless the rest of the way.
Morrow also helped himself out at the plate with a home run, a single, a run scored and four RBIs. Easton Kirk went 3-for-4 with a home run, two doubles, three runs and two RBIs. Taylor Hayes also tallied three hits, two runs and two RBIs. Baer had a hit and scored twice. Bailey Graves contributed a hit and a RBI. Mason Mohon, Christian Doss and Michael Rogers each had a hit and scored a run. Rogers also drove in a run for the Bulldogs (11-8).
Clifton suffered the loss for the Tigers (12-5).
The Tigers bounced back from the loss against Piedmont to post a 10-2 victory over Weaver. Piedmont fell in its second game of the day to Etowah 6-3.
In Cedar Bluff’s win over Weaver, Ross Johnson homered, doubled, scored two runs and had four RBIs. Greyson Wilson had four hits, including a double, a run and two RBIs. Anthony Dingler delivered a pair of hits, including a double, and scored two runs.
Dakota Dobbins contributed a hit, a walk and two runs. Samuel Cosby and Luke Hampton both had a hit, a run and a RBI. Cosby also drew a walk. Cy Burt finished with a hit.
Dingler picked up the win on the mound for the Tigers. He surrendered just two earned runs on five hits with a walk and two strikeouts.
In Piedmont’s loss to Etowah, Mohon and Baer had a pair of hits for the Bulldogs. One of Baer’s hits was a double. He also scored a run. Hayes contributed a hit, a run and a RBI. Rogers had a hit. Logan Pruitt drove in a run and Michael Floyd scored a run.
Mohon suffered the loss. He tossed four innings, giving up just one earned run on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
Baer went three innings and gave up one earned run on three hits with a pair of strikeouts.
