Hill’s 32 save Illinois from IUPUI upset

-

Malcolm Hill scored 23 of his 32 points in the second half, and Illinois shot 55 percent from the field overall and 60 percent in the second half to fight off IUPUI 85- 77 on Tuesday in Champaign.

The Illini ( 7- 3) opened the game with a 10- 0 run, then got sloppy. They committed eight turnovers in the first half, enabling the Jaguars ( 3- 6) to rally to a 42- 41 halftime lead.

But Hill got going after the break and helped Illinois avoid a repeat of its home loss Nov. 21 to Winthrop that started a threegame skid.

‘‘ Put the ball in his hands,’’ Illini guard Tracy Abrams said of Hill. ‘‘ He’s a great player, one of the best in the country, and we have to give him the ball.’’

Leron Black added 16 points and nine rebounds for Illinois despite battling foul trouble for most of the game. Matt O’Leary led IUPUI with 25 points, including four three- pointers.
