Harden lifts Rock­ets past Cavs

James Harden had a triple­dou­ble of 35 points, 11 re­bounds and 13 as­sists to help the Rock­ets beat the vis­it­ing Cava­liers 117- 113 on Thurs­day night.

Harden also had five steals and a block as Hous­ton ex­tended its win­ning streak to four games.

LeBron James had 33 points for the Cava­liers, and Jeff Green added 27.

Harden has scored 30 or more points in three of the last four games, high­lighted by a 56- point per­for­mance in a win over the Jazz on Sun­day. It’s the sec­ond triple­dou­ble of the sea­son for Harden and the 33rd of his ca­reer.

Nats hire Hale as bench coach

For­mer ma­jor- league skip­per Chip Hale will be the bench coach for new Na­tion­als man­ager Dave Martinez, while Derek Lilliquist will be the team’s pitch­ing coach.

Hale man­aged the Di­a­mond­backs in 2015 and 2016. Lilliquist was the Car­di­nals’ pitch­ing coach for the past six sea­son.

Rob Thom­son, a bench coach on Joe Gi­rardi’s staff and Aaron Boone, who hit one of the most fa­mous homers in Yan­kees’ his­tory, are among the can­di­dates to be the Yan­kees’ next man­ager.

Don Mat­tingly will re­turn for the third sea­son of his four- year con­tract as Mar­lins man­ager. The re­cent sale of the fran­chise to a group in­clud­ing Derek Jeter had left Mat­tingly’s fu­ture in ques­tion.

Pitino lawyer: Al­le­ga­tions ‘ false’

Rick Pitino’s lawyer says al­le­ga­tions in an in­dict­ment that im­plies for­mer Louisville men’s bas­ket­ball coach was in­volved and aware of money pay­ments to re­cruits are “false, mis­lead­ing and defam­a­tory.” Steve B. Pence re­it­er­ated that Pitino had no knowl­edge of any pay­ments to play­ers.

Chris­tian Dawkins, who was in­dicted this week, says dur­ing a recorded con­ver­sa­tion a coach agreed to call an Adi­das ex­ec­u­tive for money to send the fam­ily of a re­cruit. Pitino is not named in the in­dict­ment.

Pitino was fired Oct. 16 by Louisville’s Ath­letic As­so­ci­a­tion af­ter the school ac­knowl­edged that it was be­ing in­ves­ti­gated.
