Loaiza en­ters plea of not guilty

For­mer White Sox righthander Este­ban Loaiza pleaded not guilty to drug charges Wed­nes­day in San Diego County Su­pe­rior Court in the wake of his ar­rest Fri­day for al­legedly pos­sess­ing 44 pounds of sus­pected co­caine.

Prose­cu­tors charged Loaiza, an All- Star with the Sox in 2003 and 2004 and the Amer­i­can League starter in the 2003 All- Star Game, with pos­ses­sion and trans­porta­tion for sale of more than 10 kilo­grams ( 22 pounds) of co­caine or heroin and of using a false com­part­ment to smug­gle drugs.

If con­victed, Loaiza would face up to 20 years and eight months in prison.

Yan­kees slug­ger Aaron Judge took bat­ting prac­tice for the first time since hav­ing surgery on his left shoul- der dur­ing the off­sea­son and said he is on track to play on Open­ing Day. Judge hit a rookie- record 52 home runs last sea­son and was a unan­i­mous pick for AL Rookie of the Year.
