Shiffrin golden in giant slalom
Mikaela Shiffrin gave the United States its first non- snowboard gold medal of the Winter Games by winning the women’s giant slalom with a two- run time of 2 minutes, 20.02 seconds Thursday.
Shiffrin was in second place behind Manuela Moelgg of Italy after the first run, so she was the second- to- last skier among the top 30 finishers for the second run. She overtook Ragnhild Mowinckel of Norway, then waited for Moelgg’s final run. Moelgg struggled from the start and wound up finishing eighth. Mowinckel took the silver and Federica Brignone of Italy the bronze.
Shiffrin finished fifth in the giant slalom at the 2014 Sochi Games. She will try to defend her Olympic slalom gold Friday.
