Machado a Man( ny) in demand
USA Today reported Monday that the Orioles might be looking to package shortstop Manny Machado and left- hander Zach Britton to increase their return on any deal they would make before the non- waiver trade deadline July 31.
The Orioles have plenty of incentive to trade both players because they will be eligible for free agency after the season. MLB. com reported the Brewers might be the frontrunners to acquire Machado, but trade rumors also have linked him to the Braves, Cardinals, Cubs, Diamondbacks, Dodgers, Indians, Phillies and Yankees.
‘‘ Everywhere I see it’s just Manny, Manny, Manny,’’ Machado said before the Orioles’ doubleheader against the Yankees. ‘‘ It kind of gets a little distracting at times.’’
Machado, who will start at short for the American League in the All- Star Game, is hitting .309 with 21 home runs and 60 RBI. His .934 OPS ranks among the top 10 in the AL.
Britton had 120 saves and ERAs of 1.65, 1.92 and 0.54 in 2014- 16, but he has struggled after missing the first 2 ½ months this season while recovering from surgery on his right Achilles tendon. He has a 4.63 ERA and two saves.
Marlins top Brewers in 10
Bryan Holaday singled home the winning run with one out in the 10th inning to lift the Marlins past the visiting Brewers 4- 3.
With one out in the 10th, Miguel Rojas was hit by a pitch from Corey Knebel ( 2- 1) and took second on a walk to Cameron Maybin. After a double steal put runners on second and third, Holaday singled to center.
The Brewers loaded the bases with one out in the top of the 10th, but Brad Miller grounded into a double play to end the threat.
All- Star notes
Rays left- hander Blake Snell expressed frustration about not being picked for the AL All- Star team and said being added as an alternate wouldn’t be the same as being an original selection. He is 12- 4 with an AL- leading 2.09 ERA.
† Giants catcher Buster Posey will miss the All- Star Game because of an issue with his right hip, which needs an injection to calm the inflammation. The Cardinals’ Yadier Molina will take Posey’s place on the National League roster.
