Giants star catcher Buster Posey de­cided to opt out of the 2020 sea­son out of health con­cerns for his newly adopted twin baby girls dur­ing the coro­n­avirus pan­demic.

The ba­bies were born pre­ma­turely, and Posey said af­ter con­sul­ta­tions with his wife and doc­tor he de­cided skip­ping the sea­son was in his fam­ily’s best in­ter­est.

The 2012 NL MVP and three­time World Se­ries cham­pion joins other big-name play­ers such as Dodgers pitcher David Price, Na­tion­als first base­man Ryan Zim­mer­man, the Rock­ies’ Ian Des­mond and Di­a­mond­backs pitcher Mike Leake in de­cid­ing not to take part this sea­son.

All-Star slug­ger Joey Gallo was cleared to re­turn to the Rangers for team work­outs af­ter pre­vi­ously test­ing pos­i­tive for the coro­n­avirus.

MLB and the play­ers’ union say 58 play­ers and eight staff mem­bers tested pos­i­tive for COVID-19 through the fi­nal round of the in­take screen­ing process. That’s a rate of 1.8%.
