Rapper FBG Duck shot to death, 2 wounded in targeted daytime attack in Gold Coast
FBG Duck killed, 2 injured in attack police believe ‘was specifically targeted for these individuals’
Rapper FBG Duck was shot dead and two others were wounded in a targeted attack Tuesday afternoon on a Gold Coast street known for its high-end boutiques and luxury stores.
The shoppers were standing on the sidewalk when a pair of vehicles pulled up, with two gunmen stepping out of each to open fire, Deputy Chief Daniel O’Shea said at a news conference at the scene.
The shooting happened about 4:37 p.m. in the first block of East Oak Street, he said.
FBG Duck, whose name is Carlton Weekly, was struck multiple times and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead about half an hour later, according to a police source and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. He was 26 years old.
FBG Duck rose to national prominence in 2018 off the strength of his hit single, “Slide,” which quickly grew into a mainstay on hip-hop radio and racked up over 53.5 million streams on YouTube alone.
Another man, 36, was taken to the same hospital in serious condition with gunshot wounds to his back and side. Authorities have not released his name.
A 26-year-old woman sitting in a parked vehicle was shot in her hand, police said. She was taken to St. Joseph Hospital, where her condition stabilized.
The gunmen were last seen westbound on Oak Street in a black Taurus and a silver-colored Chrysler 300, O’Shea said.
“We don’t expect this type of activity in this neighborhood,” O’Shea said. “This area is well policed, and this is something that was specifically targeted for these individuals ... To see this happen in the middle of the day is very, very disturbing.”
He also encouraged anyone with information to contact police.
“We’ll take every tip we can get,” O’Shea said. “It could be the most minute thing but it helps our detectives out in putting the pieces of this puzzle together.”
Several jewelry stores are located on the block where the shooting took place.
Officers placed at least 50 evidence markers in the street and searched a dark-colored car parked nearby. The glass of the Dolce and Gabbana storefront was shattered near where police were investigating.
Howard Gordon, who owns Bravco Beauty on Oak Street with his wife, said he heard what sounded like
“a machine gun” and a car speeding off. He said a bystander outside the store ran inside.
Gordon and his wife have owned the shop more than 40 years, and he said he hasn’t seen anything like Tuesday’s incident before.
“It’s almost like I’m in shock, still not believing what I heard,” Gordon said later.
Tony Moffett, a security guard at Tory Burch, said he saw someone fire shots about five minutes before the shooting that wounded the three people.
He said two men were speaking with each other on the sidewalk in front of the boutique Cos when one of them pulled out a handgun and fired shots.
The shooter ran east while the other person ran west, Moffett said.
About five minutes later, he said he heard another six or eight shots farther west down the street, where cops later taped off a crime scene.
“I’m like how did this happen — out of nowhere,” Moffett said.
O’Shea said police were investigating the report of shots fired prior to the shooting.
The first block of west Oak Street is typically a peaceful place, Moffett said.
“I walk up and down here. Nothing happens like that,” he said.
Activist Ja’Mal Green, who said he knew people close to FBG Duck, called on the city to help young people cope with the rapper’s death.
“He was pretty popular and, at the end of the day, there are going to be a lot of people angry at this,” Green said. “A lot of young people are going to lose hope because he was an idol. It’s going to take the city a large effort to help young people cope with this loss.”
