HOW TO RAPPEL SAFELY WITH ROPES OF TWO DIFFERENT SIZES

Long routes often require double-rope rappels for the descent. Unless you’re using a twin- or half-rope system, carrying two full-length single ropes can add up to a lot of weight. Bringing a single rope for leading and a static tag line (around 6mm) can be a good option. However, the difference in diameter between the lead line (9–10mm) and the tag line requires extra care and attention during rappels. The following is a recommended method for rappelling when using one standard-diameter and one small-diameter rope.
