Climbing - - GEAR TESTED -

When a veneer of ice covered the trail to Boulder, Colorado’s First Flatiron, our tester considered retreat— that is, until he cinched down the double speed lacing of the Approach Pro GTX. These Gore-Tex– lined performance approach shoes stayed dry through the snow, and the Vibram Roc Trac treads added friction on the icy trail and held fast on the 5.6 technical “scrambling” of the Flatiron’s East Face. The board- lasted shoes offered good support for hiking and easy climbing; our tester, who used them on late- fall/early- winter approaches, described them as “a light, comfy go- to for steep, snowy, and technical approaches.” $225, lowaboots.com
