“He knows nothing but war,” Matt Damon says of his mercenary character, William, in the 12th-century drama The Great Wall. “He’ll fight for anybody who pays him.” In this case, he’s enlisted by a secret order of the Chinese government to battle monsters. “For the first time, he sees there might be something greater than just his own personal gain to fight for,” Matt says. Directed by Zhang Yimou (Raise the Red Lantern), the epic also stars Willem Dafoe as Sir Ballard, an English teacher who teams up with William to try to escape from the army that has imprisoned him on the Great Wall. Shot on location in China, the film was a huge hit there. [PG-13]

“William is an extremely

capable fighter,” Matt says. “He’s like a Delta Force guy from 1100.”
