MEG RYAN & JOHN MELLENCAMP

THE ON-AND-OFF DUO ARE BACK ON — AND SPENDING MORE TIME TOGETHER THAN EVER

After their rough 2014 split, the on/off couple are back together and blissfully in love.

John Mellencamp sweetly grabbed Meg Ryan’s hand upon exiting her New York City apartment on Sept. 15 as they headed to a cozy lunch at nearby Café Altro Paradiso. “They were hugging, making each other laugh,” a source tells Closer of the romantic stroll. “They looked so happy — like they were a new couple!”

With two breakups behind them, John and Meg’s latest reunion has many wondering if their third shot at love will be the charm. “John’s putting a lot of effort into making it last this time. He doesn’t want to blow it again,” a friend of the rocker (who split with supermodel-turned-entrepreneur Christie Brinkley in August 2016) tells Closer. “Christie’s as sweet as can be, but she’s all about business,” the friend adds. “As good a time as he had with her, John feels like Meg understands his artist soul more. Meg feels like home to his heart.”

Throughout his year with Christie, “Meg was never far from John’s mind,” an insider tells Closer, noting that John, 65, wanted a reconciliation all along. As for the 55-yearold Sleepless in Seattle actress? “She’s re-entering the relationship with realistic expectations. So far, so good,” the insider assures. “Meg’s as happy as I’ve seen her in years!”

FINDING THEIR GROOVE

John’s openness to spending more time in NYC has something to do with Meg’s smitten mood. “John is a real road warrior, but he couldn’t get his summer tour done fast enough,” his friend says. Since it wrapped on Sept. 3, he’s been pretty much glued to Meg’s side in the Big Apple, where her daughter, Daisy, 12, is back in school. (Jack, Meg’s son with Dennis Quaid, is 25.)

“The allure of staying in New York with Meg is pretty strong,” the friend says of John, a dad of five whose home base is in Indiana. “It shows how he’s changed. He’s even waffling about hitting the road next summer.”

Though their friends say wedding bells aren’t expected anytime soon, it’s not for a lack of desire on John’s part. “I think he’d marry Meg tomorrow if she’d agree,” the insider says, “but they’re not putting any undue pressures on each other right now.”

Instead, they’re just enjoying each moment they get to share with each other. “He’s world-class,” Meg raves of John, and she’s one of his biggest fans. “He’s got some kind of magic touch.”

John’s feelings for Meg are just as strong. “She’s a beautiful girl and I know I’ll never, ever, ever be with a funnier woman,” he gushes. “She was just an angel sent to me at the right time.”

“Life is so good with her in it,” Meg says of daughter Daisy, who recently went back to school in New York.

“Of course it hurt

Meg to see him with another girl,” an insider tells Closer of John’s yearlong relationship with Christie Brinkley.
