Melissa Rivers learned how to coerce her 16-year-old son, Cooper, into spending quality time with her from her own mom, the late comedian Joan Rivers. “[She was] bribing Cooper from the minute he was born,” she told Closer at the National Retail Federation Shop.org Digital Retail Opening Reception on Sept. 15. “I once had to say, ‘Mom, you don’t need to buy him things to make him love you!’ ” So what does she think her mother would say about how she’s raising Cooper? “I know she would be laughing and saying, ‘You do the same thing!’ ” Melissa admits. “Especially when I’m [fed up].”

“Joan always said being a grandparent was much better than being a parent.” — Melissa Rivers

“Cooper has a great sense of humor,” Joan said about her grandson (left in 2011).
