Look back at Westworld star Thandie Newton’s storied Hollywood career.

GROWING UP in England as the daughter of an artist and a Zimbabwean princess, Melanie Thandiwe Newton once reflected, “From about the age of 5, I was aware that I didn’t fit. I was the black, atheist kid in the all-white, Catholic school run by nuns. I was an anomaly.” She was sure of one thing, however: “I was just going to be a chorus dancer and I was very happy with that.” Of course, she found her way to acting instead — forging a multifaceted career, yet one in which she still looks to fit the bill. As Thandie, who turned 46 on Nov. 6, puts it, “If you’re a woman, you have to be twice as good, and if you’re black, you have to be twice as good on top of that.”
