MY LIFE IN 10 Pictures
GROWING UP in the Chicago suburbs with eight rowdy siblings, William James Murray had no trouble standing out. “I’m a loudmouth. I’m kind
of a clown,” said the star, who enjoyed entertaining family members with his silly antics. “In order to get any attention from my parents, you had to demonstrate a little bit. So that’s sort of what my personality is.” It’s served him well. After dropping out of college, Bill, 70, joined The Second City improv comedy troupe in Chicago, then headed to New York City, where he made a name for himself on SNL. Soon he was starring in comedies like Meatballs, Caddyshack and Stripes. “If they were funny, you did them,” he said of his early movies. “There wasn’t this life-ordeath thing. It was like, ‘Turn on two cameras and let’s go.’ ” While relationships haven’t been so easy for the twice-divorced actor and father of six, his outlook remains positive. “As much as the divorce was very hard, the fallout of it has been really great,” he admitted. “I ended
up much closer to my [sons] than I ever would have been.”
“People say I’m difficult and sometimes that’s a badge of honor.”
