Backsplash Basics
You might have noticed one thing that is missing in this country kitchen: There is no backsplash. Below, we explore the pros and cons of the backsplash.
PROS
The aesthetic. Whether a simple, affordable laminate or a sleek, customizable glass, a backsplash can give a kitchen that extra “oomph” to achieve a finished look. It also presents an opportunity to tweak the entire style with a dash of glamour or maybe a hint of earthy tones.
The cleanup. A backsplash is the best way to prevent splash stains that come from meal prep and other cooking activities. Though it’s important to consider scratch resistance, heat resistance and durability when selecting a material, most backsplashes at least make cleaning up in the kitchen easier.
CONS
The cost. Though many materials have decreased in cost over the years, a kitchen backsplash can quickly take a kitchen from budget-friendly to budget-burdened. It’s also important to keep in mind installation fees and upkeep.
Our recommendations: Avoid engineered stone, granite and glass if you’re seeking a cost-conscious backsplash.
The wear and tear. Materials such as soapstone and Caesarstone are considered durable and low maintenance, but many backsplash materials require constant attention and upkeep. Stainless steel scratches, and granite needs to be resealed often. If the pros don’t outweigh the cons, you’re probably better off using décor pieces and fabrics instead.
