With their mix of or­ganic farms and hik­ing trails, the Berkshires have served as in­spi­ra­tion to writ­ers and artists for over 150 years. The ru­ral Berkshires re­gion in the moun­tains of west­ern Mas­sachusetts pro­vides plenty of op­por­tu­ni­ties for out­door ac­tiv­i­ties. The vil­lages and towns, with their mu­se­ums, the­aters and shop­ping, also of­fer a cul­tural par­adise. The Berkshires have fall fo­liage ear­lier than the rest of Mas­sachusetts, so visit in early Oc­to­ber to catch the col­ors at their peak.

Must Do: The Berk­shire Botan­i­cal Gar­dens Har­vest Fes­ti­val oc­curs ev­ery Colum­bus Day week­end, with chil­dren’s ac­tiv­i­ties, rides, games, en­ter­tain­ment and re­gional ven­dors.

Must Eat: Dine at the bistro restau­rant Once Upon a Ta­ble, for a cozy meal in Stock­bridge.

Must Shop: Stop by the Berk­shire Em­po­rium and An­tiques for some unique vin­tage finds.

Must Stay: The Old Inn on the Green is a re­stored inn at the cen­ter of the his­toric and scenic vil­lage of New Marl­bor­ough.
