Step into Cindy and Bob Ellis’ Redlands, California, bungalow home at the holidays and it’s almost like stepping into a magical fairy-tale wonderland. Candelabras teeter atop door frames with silver strands of shimmering beads dripping from each arm. Gauzy billows of sheer pink and white fabric and ribbon drape around tables, chairs and picture frames. Magnificent architectural pieces anchor each room—and oh, the chandeliers! Suspended from nearly every ceiling is a stunning glass-and-metal piece that captures your fancy. The Ellis home truly is a Christmas fairy tale.

“My love of the old Victorian comes out in my decorating,” Cindy says. As an artist, she creates dreamy paintings of old-fashioned roses and garden settings. She often finds herself painting her favorite bloom onto Christmas ornaments or other decorations, which she mingles with vintage jewelry, old frames, glistening crowns, lace and other accoutrements of the Victorian era. Cindy’s husband, Bob, also an artist, crafts handmade vintage-style garden structures and birdhouses. He also puts his skills to use arranging various architectural elements and salvage pieces as showcases for the couple’s lavish holiday decorating and the twice-yearly sales they hold at their home.

For Christmas, Cindy begins planning the first of October, figuring out the theme for the decorating scheme and their holiday open house. “By the end of October, I begin decorating,” she says. “Every year, I have a new theme.” Cindy has created decorating schemes around dress forms, garden pieces and more. This year’s theme will be angel wings and roses. In addition to Bob and Cindy’s artwork, her daughter, Elishia, also creates many beautiful pieces for the shows. “We go all out for Christmas,” Cindy affirms.

The bungalow is a step back from the Ellises’ previous home—a large Victorian. The couple anticipated downsizing, but as Cindy points out, “that all changed when we started adding on.” First, Bob created a vintage garden room, and then he built Cindy’s studio, and last year, he created another
