ALEXANDER GRAHAM BELL, THE INVENTOR OF THE TELEPHONE, IS ALSO THE PERSON
to whom the expression “when one door closes, another opens” is attributed. Rhonda and Justin Gatchek can testify to the truth of Bell’s famous observation. “In 2011, I wasn’t yet 30. We had moved several times in six years and were living in Florida when Justin (an Air Force veteran) left active duty,” Rhonda recalls. “We moved to Massachusetts and rented a house for a year.”
The couple hoped to find an old farmhouse to buy; however, they settled for a contemporary New Hampshire home. “It didn’t appeal to us at first because it lacked character, but we were confident, because we’d moved several times in the military, we could work with it. The Gatcheks’ decor is an eclectic infusion of two styles— farmhouse and industrial. “I grew up on a farm in Oklahoma, and Justin is very mechanical,” Rhonda says. “Our look is based on neutral colors. I find it very soothing but not boring.”
Most pieces were either built and painted by Rhonda and Justin or “found.” “I think the only new things we own are mattresses, lighting and seating!” Justin laughs.
“Everything in our home has a story, and we love that,” Rhonda says. “When we have guests, it’s almost like show-and-tell in the third grade.”
