HALO Wireless Beer ph Meter

-

HANNA Instruments’ HALO Wireless Beer ph Meter brings basically foolproof, instant, recordable ph testing to the brewing process. The probe comes with multiple buffer solutions for quick and easy calibration. It also comes with cleaning and storage solutions to ensure the probe is properly maintained. It’s packaged well in a box with form-fitting foam cutouts, allowing for safer storage. HANNA Instruments encased the glass probe in sturdy titanium, making it hardy enough for a typical brewing environment.

The probe itself is easy to connect to an Apple or Android device using Bluetooth, and the set up takes just a few seconds. From there, setting up preferences in the app is easy, allowing you to use Fahrenheit, Celsius, graphs, tables, and other options to record and track your results. You can send the results to yourself or share with a team or save it to a spreadsheet, and the amount of data you can save is limited only by your phone or tablet capacity. Taking measurements is instantaneous—no appreciable lag time at all—and the device automatically adjusts for temperature. We used it while brewing—using plain water, mash, wort, and post-pitched wort, varying the temperatures, and it recorded consistently and effortlessly.

The price point (and the one-year lifespan of the ph meter) probably don’t make this the right product for the casual homebrewer. However, if you’re serious about entering competitions and meticulously dialing in recipes, or if you’re a brewer or technician in a smaller pro brewing environment, the HALO wireless beer ph meter is an excellent investment for easy data collection and tracking. —Libby Murphy
