This ba­sic top will give you a taste of color block­ing that re­quires you to work with only one color at a time. Be­gin with color A from the bot­tom up, then change to color B through the bind-off.

Gauge

18 sts and 26 rows = 4 inches/10cm in St st us­ing larger nee­dles (blocked). To save time, take time to check gauge.

Spe­cial Ab­bre­vi­a­tions

Wrap and Turn (W&T): Sl next st pwise to RH nee­dle; bring yarn to RS of work be­tween nee­dles; sl same st back to LH nee­dle; bring yarn to WS, wrap­ping st. Turn, leav­ing rem sts un­worked, then beg work­ing back in op­po­site di­rec­tion. To hide wraps on sub­se­quent rows: Work wrap tog with wrapped st. Make 1 Right (M1R): In­sert LH nee­dle from back to front un­der hor­i­zon­tal strand be­tween last st worked and next st on LH nee­dle; knit through front of re­sult­ing loop. Make 1 Left (M1L): In­sert LH nee­dle from front to back un­der hor­i­zon­tal strand be­tween last st worked and next st on LH nee­dle; knit through back of re­sult­ing loop. Work 2 inches in St st, end­ing with a WS row.

Inc 1 st at each end of next row, then [ev­ery 10 rows] 8 (0,0, 0, 0) times, [ev­ery 8 rows] 0 (10, 8,0, 0) times, [ev­ery 6 rows] 0 (0, 4, 13, 9) times and [ev­ery 4 rows] 0 (0,0, 2, 8) times—54 (59, 65, 72, 77) sts.

At the same time, when piece mea­sures 71/2 inches, cut A and join B; con­tinue with B to end of sleeve.

Af­ter shap­ing is com­plete, work even un­til piece mea­sures 161/2 inches, end­ing with a WS row. Shape Cap Bind off 5 (5,6, 7, 7) sts at beg of next 8 rows.

Bind off rem 14 (19, 17, 16, 21) sts.

Fin­ish­ing

Block pieces to mea­sure­ments.

Join shoul­ders us­ing 3-nee­dle bind-off (see page 80).

Neck Edg­ing With RS fac­ing, us­ing cir­cu­lar nee­dle and B and beg at left shoul­der seam, pick up and knit ap­prox 140 (144, 144, 148, 148) sts evenly around neck; pm for beg of rnd and join. Purl 1 rnd, knit 1 rnd, purl 1 rnd. Loosely bind off all sts kwise. Mark bot­tom of arm­holes on front and back 6 (61/2, 71/4, 8, 81/2) inches from shoul­der seams. Set in sleeves be­tween mark­ers. Sew side and sleeve seams. Weave in ends.
