Spe­cial Tech­niques

Pi­cot Cast-On: Us­ing slip knot, cast on 1 st; *us­ing cable cast-on (see page 79), cast on 4 sts; bind off 2 sts, then slip rem sts on RH nee­dle back to LH nee­dle; rep from * un­til de­sired num­ber of sts are cast on. Pi­cot Bind-off: Bind off 2 sts; *slip rem sts on RH nee­dle back to LH nee­dle, then cable cast-on 2 sts; bind off 4 sts; rep from * un­til all sts are bound off.

Pat­tern Notes

Lace panel for bot­tom border is worked first, af­ter which stitches for body are picked up along side edge of panel. Body is worked in the round to the arm­holes at which point it’s sep­a­rated into front and back sec­tions. Sleeves are worked flat and seamed. When work­ing flat, knit the first and last stitch of ev­ery row for edge stitch.

Lace Border

With shorter cir­cu­lar nee­dle, cast on 27 sts.

Work 17 (18, 19, 21, 22) reps of 20-row Di­a­mond Lace pat. Bind off all sts. Sew short ends tog.

Body

With RS of border fac­ing, us­ing longer cir­cu­lar nee­dle and start­ing at seam, pick up and knit 240 (254, 266, 294, 308) sts evenly around (ap­prox 14 sts for each 20-row pat rep); pm for beg of rnd.

Work in St st un­til body mea­sures 103/4 (111/4, 113/4, 121/4, 123/4) inches from top of border and on last rnd, place 2nd marker at mid­point, 120 (127, 133, 147, 154) sts from first marker.

Front

Di­vi­sion row (RS): Re­move beg of rnd marker; kfb, knit to 1 st be­fore 2nd marker, kfb; re­move marker and turn; trans­fer rem sts to sep­a­rate nee­dle or

waste yarn for back—122 (129, 135, 149, 156) front sts rem. Row 2 (WS): K1, purl to last st, k1.

Main­tain­ing 1 edge st each side, work even un­til arm­holes mea­sure 4 (41/4, 43/4, 5, 51/2) inches, end­ing with a WS row. Shape Neck Di­vi­sion Row (RS): K51 (54, 56, 63, 66); join 2nd ball of yarn and bind off cen­ter 20 (21, 23, 23, 24) sts; knit to end— 51 (54, 56, 63, 66) sts each side.

Work­ing both sides at once, bind off 3 sts at each neck edge once, 2 sts twice, then [1 st] 4 (5,5, 6, 6) times— 40 (42, 44, 50, 53) sts each side.

Work even un­til arm­holes mea­sure 7 (71/2, 8, 81/2, 9) inches, end­ing with a WS row. Shape Shoul­ders At each arm­hole edge, bind off [8(8, 8, 10, 10) sts] 4 times—8 (10, 12, 10, 13) sts each shoul­der.

Back

Trans­fer back sts to work­ing nee­dle; with RS fac­ing, re­join yarn. Row 1 (RS): Kfb, knit to last st, kfb— 122 (129, 135, 149, 156) sts.

Main­tain­ing 1 edge st each side through­out, work even un­til arm­holes mea­sure 7 (71/2, 8, 81/2, 9) inches, end­ing with a WS row. Shape Neck & Shoul­ders Note: Read through in­struc­tions be­fore be­gin­ning be­cause neck and shoul­ders are shaped si­mul­ta­ne­ously.

Mark cen­ter 32 (35, 37, 39, 40) sts— 45 (47, 49, 55, 58) sts each side. Di­vi­sion row (RS): Bind off 8 (8, 8, 10, 10) sts, knit to first marker; join 2nd ball of yarn and bind off cen­ter 32 (35, 37, 39, 40) sts; knit to end. Row 2: Work­ing both sides at once with sep­a­rate balls of yarn, bind off 8 (8, 8, 10, 10) sts; purl to end—37 (39, 41, 45, 48) sts each side.

With shorter cir­cu­lar nee­dle and us­ing Pi­cot Cast-On, cast on 46 (48, 50, 52, 54) sts. Knit 2 rows. Main­tain­ing 1 edge st each side through­out, work 16 rows in St st. Inc row (RS): K2, yo, knit to last 2 sts, yo, k2—48 (50, 52, 54, 56) sts.

Rep Inc row [ev­ery 8 rows] 13 (10, 6, 0, 0) times, then [ev­ery 6 rows] 0 (4, 10, 12, 12) times, then [ev­ery 4 rows] 0 (0,0, 5, 6) times, clos­ing yo’s on rows fol­low­ing Inc rows by purl­ing them tbl—74 (78, 84, 88, 92) sts.

Work even un­til sleeve mea­sures 19 (19, 19, 173/4, 173/4) inches, end­ing with a WS row.

Bind off.

Fin­ish­ing

Block pieces to mea­sure­ments. Sew shoul­der seams. Set in sleeves. Sew un­der­arm seam. Hem Turn gar­ment up­side down.

With RS fac­ing and us­ing longer cir­cu­lar nee­dle, start­ing at border seam, pick up and knit 240 (254, 266, 294, 308) sts around border; pm for beg of rnd. Knit 1 rnd. Work Pi­cot Bind-off around. Neck­band With RS fac­ing and us­ing shorter cir­cu­lar nee­dle, start­ing at right shoul­der seam, pick up and knit 120 (126, 132, 138, 144) sts evenly around neck­line; pm for beg of rnd. Purl 1 rnd, knit 1 rnd, purl 1 rnd. Loosely bind off all sts kwise. Weave in ends. Block again if nec­es­sary.
