Boothbay Set: Cover-Up
This light, airy layering piece is perfect for transitioning into those cool autumn months.
18 sts and 32 rows = 4 inches/10cm in Ridge St (blocked). To save time, take time to check gauge.
Slip marker (sm): Slip marker from LH to RH needle. Wrap and Turn (W&T): Slip next st pwise to RH needle. Bring yarn to opposite side of work between needles, slip same st back to LH needle. Bring yarn to opposite side of work, wrapping st. Turn, leaving rem sts unworked, then beg working back in other direction.
Ridge St (even number of sts) Row 1 (RS): K1, *yo, k2tog-tbl; rep from * to last st, k1. Row 2: P1, *yo, p2tog; rep from * to last st, p1.
Rep Rows 1 and 2 for pat.
Garter St Graft: Join live sts as for Kitchener st (see page 79), but work steps 2 and 3 as follows: Step 2: Insert tapestry needle into first st on back needle as if to knit. Draw yarn through st and slip st off knitting needle. Step 3: Insert needle into the next st on same (back) needle as if to purl, leaving st on knitting needle.
Back and fronts are worked separately from the top down to the underarms; back is worked first, then stitches for right and left fronts are picked up along shoulder (cast-on) edge of back. Back and fronts are joined at underarms and body is worked in one piece.
Armhole edgings are picked up and worked in the round.
Back neckband is worked back and forth and joined to the neckline edge as you go. Back neckband is shaped using short rows.
Garment is worked back and forth in rows. Circular needle is used to accommodate the large number of stitches. Do not join.
Back Cast on 140 (156, 172) sts. Rows 1 (RS) and 2: K1, work Ridge St pat to last st, k1.
Maintaining edge sts in garter st, work even in Ridge St pat until piece measures 83/4 (10, 111/2) inches, ending with a WS row.
Cut yarn. Place sts on st holder or scrap yarn. Right Front With RS of back facing and beg at top right edge, pick up and knit 54 (62, 70) sts along cast-on edge of back, pm; using provisional cast-on (see page 79), cast on 20 sts for front band—74 (82, 90) sts. Row 1 (WS): K20, sm; work Row 2 of Ridge St to last 1 st, k1. Row 2 (RS): K1, work Row 1 of Ridge St to marker, sm; knit to end.
Rep Rows 1 and 2 until right front measures 83/4 (10, 111/2) inches, ending with a WS row.
Cut yarn. Place sts on st holder or scrap yarn. Left Front With RS of back facing and beg at top left edge, count 54 (62, 70) sts from side to center; pm in last st counted.
Using provisional cast-on, cast on 20 sts for front band, pm; beg at marked st, pick up and knit 54 (62, 70) sts along cast-on edge of back—74 (82, 90) sts. Row 1 (WS): K1, work Row 2 of Ridge St to marker, sm; knit to end. Row 2 (RS): K20, sm; work Row 1 of Ridge St to last st, k1.
Rep Rows 1 and 2 until left front measures 83/4 (10, 111/2) inches, ending with a WS row.
Do not cut yarn and leave sts on needle. Body With WS of left front still facing, transfer back and right front sts to working needle so that they’re set up in the following order from left to right: left front, back, right front. Turn. Row 1 (RS): K20, sm; work Ridge St to marker, sm; k20—288 (320, 352) sts.
Work even until body measures approx 151/2 (15, 141/4) inches from underarm or 3 inches less than desired length, ending with a WS row. Work 3 inches in garter st. Bind off loosely.
Armhole Edging With RS facing and beg at center underarm, pick up and knit approx 3 sts for every 5 rows around armhole; pm for beg of rnd and join.
Work 2 inches in garter st (purl 1 rnd, knit 1 rnd). Bind off loosely. Rep for other armhole edging. Back Neckband Unzip provisional cast-on of left front band and transfer live sts to 16-inch needle—19 sts.
With RS facing, using longer needle and beg at right back neck edge, pick up and knit 16 sts along back neck to center (1 st in each st), pm; pick up and knit 16 sts to end of back neck, then knit across 19 band sts—51 sts.
Join band sts to back-neck sts as follows: Row 1 (WS): K18 band sts, k2tog (last band st and next back-neck st); turn. Row 2 (RS): Sl 1, knit to end.
Rep [Rows 1 and 2] 15 times, ending with a RS row. (At this point, all backneck sts between shoulder and marker for center back will be joined to band; remove marker.) Short-row set 1 (WS): Knit to last 2 band sts, W&T; (RS): knit to end. Short-row set 2 (WS): Knit to 2 sts before previously wrapped st, W&T; (RS): knit to end. Rep [Short-row set 2] 7 times. Rep Rows 1 and 2 once, joining band to next back-neck st. Short-row set 3 (WS): K1, W&T; (RS): knit to end. Short-row set 4 (WS): Knit to 1 st past previously wrapped st, W&T; (RS): knit to end. Rep [Short-row set 4] 7 times. Rep Rows 1 and 2 until all back-neck sts are joined to band; leave rem 19 sts on needle.
Unzip provisional cast-on of right front band and transfer 19 live sts to opposite tip of needle.
Join back neckband to right front band using Garter St Graft. Weave in ends. Block to measurements.
