Spe­cial Ab­bre­vi­a­tions

Slip marker (sm): Slip marker from LH to RH nee­dle. Wrap and Turn (W&T): Slip next st pwise to RH nee­dle. Bring yarn to op­po­site side of work be­tween nee­dles, slip same st back to LH nee­dle. Bring yarn to op­po­site side of work, wrap­ping st. Turn, leav­ing rem sts un­worked, then beg work­ing back in other di­rec­tion.

Ridge St (even num­ber of sts) Row 1 (RS): K1, *yo, k2­tog-tbl; rep from * to last st, k1. Row 2: P1, *yo, p2­tog; rep from * to last st, p1.

Spe­cial Tech­nique

Garter St Graft: Join live sts as for Kitch­ener st (see page 79), but work steps 2 and 3 as fol­lows: Step 2: In­sert ta­pes­try nee­dle into first st on back nee­dle as if to knit. Draw yarn through st and slip st off knit­ting nee­dle. Step 3: In­sert nee­dle into the next st on same (back) nee­dle as if to purl, leav­ing st on knit­ting nee­dle.

Pat­tern Notes

Back and fronts are worked sep­a­rately from the top down to the un­der­arms; back is worked first, then stitches for right and left fronts are picked up along shoul­der (cast-on) edge of back. Back and fronts are joined at un­der­arms and body is worked in one piece.

Arm­hole edg­ings are picked up and worked in the round.

Back neck­band is worked back and forth and joined to the neck­line edge as you go. Back neck­band is shaped us­ing short rows.

Gar­ment is worked back and forth in rows. Cir­cu­lar nee­dle is used to ac­com­mo­date the large num­ber of stitches. Do not join.

Cover-Up

Back Cast on 140 (156, 172) sts. Rows 1 (RS) and 2: K1, work Ridge St pat to last st, k1.

Main­tain­ing edge sts in garter st, work even in Ridge St pat un­til piece mea­sures 83/4 (10, 111/2) inches, end­ing with a WS row.

Cut yarn. Place sts on st holder or scrap yarn. Right Front With RS of back fac­ing and beg at top right edge, pick up and knit 54 (62, 70) sts along cast-on edge of back, pm; us­ing pro­vi­sional cast-on (see page 79), cast on 20 sts for front band—74 (82, 90) sts. Row 1 (WS): K20, sm; work Row 2 of Ridge St to last 1 st, k1. Row 2 (RS): K1, work Row 1 of Ridge St to marker, sm; knit to end.

Rep Rows 1 and 2 un­til right front mea­sures 83/4 (10, 111/2) inches, end­ing with a WS row.

Cut yarn. Place sts on st holder or scrap yarn. Left Front With RS of back fac­ing and beg at top left edge, count 54 (62, 70) sts from side to cen­ter; pm in last st counted.

Us­ing pro­vi­sional cast-on, cast on 20 sts for front band, pm; beg at marked st, pick up and knit 54 (62, 70) sts along cast-on edge of back—74 (82, 90) sts. Row 1 (WS): K1, work Row 2 of Ridge St to marker, sm; knit to end. Row 2 (RS): K20, sm; work Row 1 of Ridge St to last st, k1.

Rep Rows 1 and 2 un­til left front mea­sures 83/4 (10, 111/2) inches, end­ing with a WS row.

Do not cut yarn and leave sts on nee­dle. Body With WS of left front still fac­ing, trans­fer back and right front sts to work­ing nee­dle so that they’re set up in the fol­low­ing or­der from left to right: left front, back, right front. Turn. Row 1 (RS): K20, sm; work Ridge St to marker, sm; k20—288 (320, 352) sts.

Work even un­til body mea­sures ap­prox 151/2 (15, 141/4) inches from un­der­arm or 3 inches less than de­sired length, end­ing with a WS row. Work 3 inches in garter st. Bind off loosely.

Fin­ish­ing

Arm­hole Edg­ing With RS fac­ing and beg at cen­ter un­der­arm, pick up and knit ap­prox 3 sts for ev­ery 5 rows around arm­hole; pm for beg of rnd and join.

Work 2 inches in garter st (purl 1 rnd, knit 1 rnd). Bind off loosely. Rep for other arm­hole edg­ing. Back Neck­band Unzip pro­vi­sional cast-on of left front band and trans­fer live sts to 16-inch nee­dle—19 sts.

With RS fac­ing, us­ing longer nee­dle and beg at right back neck edge, pick up and knit 16 sts along back neck to cen­ter (1 st in each st), pm; pick up and knit 16 sts to end of back neck, then knit across 19 band sts—51 sts.

Join band sts to back-neck sts as fol­lows: Row 1 (WS): K18 band sts, k2­tog (last band st and next back-neck st); turn. Row 2 (RS): Sl 1, knit to end.

Rep [Rows 1 and 2] 15 times, end­ing with a RS row. (At this point, all back­neck sts be­tween shoul­der and marker for cen­ter back will be joined to band; re­move marker.) Short-row set 1 (WS): Knit to last 2 band sts, W&T; (RS): knit to end. Short-row set 2 (WS): Knit to 2 sts be­fore pre­vi­ously wrapped st, W&T; (RS): knit to end. Rep [Short-row set 2] 7 times. Rep Rows 1 and 2 once, join­ing band to next back-neck st. Short-row set 3 (WS): K1, W&T; (RS): knit to end. Short-row set 4 (WS): Knit to 1 st past pre­vi­ously wrapped st, W&T; (RS): knit to end. Rep [Short-row set 4] 7 times. Rep Rows 1 and 2 un­til all back-neck sts are joined to band; leave rem 19 sts on nee­dle.

Unzip pro­vi­sional cast-on of right front band and trans­fer 19 live sts to op­po­site tip of nee­dle.

Join back neck­band to right front band us­ing Garter St Graft. Weave in ends. Block to mea­sure­ments.
