22 sts and 27 rows = 4 inches/ 10cm in Rib pat. 18 sts and 27 rows = 4 inches/10cm in Lace pat. To save time, take time to check gauge.

Spe­cial Ab­bre­vi­a­tions

Make 1 (M1): In­sert LH nee­dle from back to front un­der hor­i­zon­tal strand be­tween last st worked and next st on LH nee­dle; knit into front of re­sult­ing loop. Make 1 Purl (M1P): In­sert LH nee­dle from back to front un­der hor­i­zon­tal strand be­tween last st worked and next st on LH nee­dle; purl through back of re­sult­ing loop. Slip marker (sm): Slip marker from LH nee­dle to RH nee­dle.

Pat­tern Stitches

Rib (mul­ti­ple of 3 sts + 2) Row 1 (WS): *K2, sl 1 with wyif; rep from * to last 2 sts, k2. Row 2 (RS): *P2, k1; rep from * to last 2 sts, p2.

Rep Rows 1 and 2 for pat. Lace (mul­ti­ple of 4 sts + 1) Row 1 (RS): K1, k2­tog, *yo, k1, yo, sk2p; rep from * to last 2 sts, yo, k2. Row 2: Purl. Row 3: K2, *yo, sk2p, yo, k1; rep from * to last 3 sts, yo, ssk, k1. Row 4: Purl.

Pat­tern Notes

Sweater is worked side­ways (cuff-tocuff) in one piece.

A cir­cu­lar nee­dle is used to ac­com­mo­date large num­ber of stitches; do not join.

When cast­ing on for body and col­lar, turn work and use cable cast-on method (see page 79), then turn work again and work stitches fol­low­ing in­struc­tions.

Sweater

Left Sleeve Cast on 146 sts.

Beg with Row 1, work in Rib pat un­til piece mea­sures 13 inches, end­ing with a WS row.

Front & Back Set-up row 1 (RS): Cast on 46 sts; work 27 sts in Rib pat, pm; k22, [k2­tog, k3] 6 times, k2­tog, k2, pm; work in Rib pat to end—185 sts. Set-up row 2: Cast on 46 sts; work 27 sts in Rib pat, pm; p22, [p2­tog, p3] 6 times, p2­tog, p2, sm; work in Rib pat to end—224 sts. Set-up row 3: Work Rib pat to marker, sm; work Row 1 of Lace pat to marker, sm; work Rib pat to marker, sm; work Lace pat to marker, sm; work Rib pat to end.

Work even un­til front and back mea­sures 51/2 (61/2, 71/4, 81/4, 9, 10, 103/4, 113/4) inches from sleeve, end­ing with a WS row. Back Col­lar Di­vi­sion row (RS): Work 112 sts, then turn and cast on 19 col­lar sts; place rem sts on holder or spare nee­dle for front—131 sts. Set-up row (RS): [P2, k1] 6 times, p1, work in pat to end of row.

Work­ing col­lar sts in es­tab­lished Rib pat, work even un­til col­lar mea­sures 8 (8, 81/2, 81/2, 9, 9, 91/2, 91/2) inches, end­ing with a RS row. Cut yarn then trans­fer back sts to holder or spare nee­dle. Front Col­lar Row 1 (RS): Trans­fer front sts from holder to work­ing nee­dle. With RS fac­ing, pick up and knit 19 sts along cast-on edge of back col­lar, work in pat to end of row—131 sts.

Work even un­til front col­lar mea­sures same as for back, end­ing with a RS row.

Trans­fer 19 front and back col­lar sts to sep­a­rate hold­ers. Join­ing row (WS): Work in es­tab­lished pats across rem front and back sts—224 sts.

Work even un­til piece mea­sures 51/2 (61/2, 71/4, 81/4, 9, 10, 103/4, 113/4) inches from Join­ing row, end­ing with a WS row. Next row (RS): Bind off 46 sts; re­mov­ing marker, k3, [M1, k4] 6 times, M1, k3, sm; work in pat to end—185 sts. Next row (WS): Bind off 46 sts; re­mov­ing marker, p3, [M1P, p4] 6 times, M1P, p3, pat to end of row—146 sts. Right Sleeve Set-up row (RS): Work Row 2 of Rib pat across all sts.

Work even un­til sleeve mea­sures 13 inches, end­ing with a WS row.

Bind off all sts in pat.

Fin­ish­ing

Us­ing 3-nee­dle bind-off (see page 80), join 19 sts from front and back col­lar hold­ers. Block piece to mea­sure­ments. Sew side and sleeve seams.
