Mountain Pat (worked in rnds, multiple of 8 sts) Note: A chart and key are provided on page 33 for those preferring to work pat st from a chart; when working flat, read WS Rows 1 and 3 from left to right. Rnd 1: [P1, k3] 4 times. Rnd 2: [K1, p1, k5, p1] twice. Rnd 3: [K2, p1, k3, p1, k1] twice. Rnd 4: [K3, p1, k1, p1, k2] twice.
Rep Rnds 1–4 for pat. Mountain Pat (worked flat, multiple of 8 sts) Row 1 (WS): [P3, k1] 4 times. Row 2 (RS): [K1, p1, k5, p1] twice. Row 3: [P1, k1, p3, k1, p1] twice. Row 4: [K3, p1, k1, p1, k2] twice.

Mitts are worked in the round from the bottom up to the thumbhole position, at which point the fabric is divided and worked back and forth in rows. After the thumbhole section is complete, the mitt is continued in the round.
Cuff Cast on 32 (36, 40) sts and divide evenly onto 4 dpns; mark beg of rnd and join, taking care not to twists sts.
Work 12 rnds in 2x2 Rib. Lower Hand Rnd 1: [K0 (1, 2); work 16 sts in Mountain Pat; p0 (1, 1), k0 (0, 1)] twice. Rnds 2–4: [K0 (1, 2), work 16 sts in Mountain Pat twice, k0 (1, 2)] twice.
Rep [Rnds 1–4] 4 times. Thumbhole Remove beg of rnd marker and turn, ready to work a WS row. Row 1 (WS): [P0 (0, 1), k0 (1, 1); work 16 sts in Mountain Pat; p0 (1, 2)] twice.
