Gauge

18 sts and 24 rows = 4 inches/10cm in St st us­ing larger nee­dles. To save time, take time to check gauge.

Spe­cial Ab­bre­vi­a­tions

Wrap and Turn (W&T): Sl next st pwise to RH nee­dle; bring yarn to RS of work be­tween nee­dles; sl same st back to LH nee­dle; bring yarn to WS, wrap­ping st. Turn, leav­ing rem sts un­worked, then beg work­ing back in op­po­site di­rec­tion. To hide wraps on sub­se­quent rows: Work wrap tog with wrapped st. Slip, slip, purl (ssp): Sl 2 sts 1 at a time kwise to RH nee­dle; re­turn sts to LH nee­dle in turned po­si­tion and p2­togtbl—a left-lean­ing sin­gle dec.

Pat­tern Notes

Front and back of sweater are worked flat from the bot­tom up. Shoul­ders and front hem are shaped us­ing short rows. Af­ter shoul­ders are joined, sleeves are worked flat from the arm­hole down.

Work neck and sleeve de­creases as fol­lows: work [k1, k2­tog] at be­gin­ning of right-side rows and [ssk, k1] at end; work [k1, ssp] at be­gin­ning of wrong-side rows and [p2­tog, k1] at end.

Back

With smaller nee­dles, cast on 100 (108, 118, 126, 136) sts. Knit 6 rows, end­ing with a WS row. Change to larger nee­dles; work in St st un­til piece mea­sures 21 (211/2, 22, 221/2, 23) inches, end­ing with a WS row. Shape Shoul­ders Short-row set 1 (RS): Knit to last 3 (5,5, 5, 6) sts, W&T; (WS): purl to last 3 (5,5, 5, 6) sts, W&T. Short-row set 2 (RS): Knit to 4 (5, 5, 5,6) sts be­fore pre­vi­ous wrapped st, W&T; (WS): purl to 4 (5,5, 5, 6) sts be­fore pre­vi­ous wrapped st, W&T. Cut yarn; trans­fer sts to holder for left shoul­der.

Right Neck & Shoul­der Trans­fer right shoul­der sts to work­ing nee­dle, then re­join yarn ready to work a WS row. Short-row set 7 (WS): Purl to 4 (4,5,6,6) sts be­fore pre­vi­ous wrap, W&T; (RS): knit to last 3 sts, ssk, k1—33 (37, 41, 45, 49) sts. Short-row set 3 (RS): K20, hid­ing wrap from pre­vi­ous row, W&T; (WS): purl to end of row.

Con­tinue as es­tab­lished, work­ing 4 more sts on each short-row set, un­til 44 sts have been worked, end­ing with a WS row. Next row (RS): Knit to end of row. Short-row set 1 (WS): P12, W&T; (RS): knit to end of row. Short-row set 2 (WS): P16, hid­ing wrap from pre­vi­ous row, W&T; (RS): knit to end of row. Con­tinue in St st across all sts un­til side edge of piece mea­sures 15 inches, end­ing with a WS row. Shape Neck & Shoul­ders Di­vi­sion row (RS): K50 (54, 59, 63, 68) sts, turn; trans­fer rem sts to holder for right front neck and shoul­der.

Dec 1 st at neck edge [ev­ery RS row] 19 (19, 20, 20, 21) times.

Cut yarn; trans­fer sts to holder for left front shoul­der. Block pieces to mea­sure­ments. Join shoul­ders us­ing 3-nee­dle bind­off (see pg 80).

Place mark­ers on front and back side edges 61/2 (7, 71/2, 8, 81/2) inches down from shoul­der join.

Sleeves

With RS fac­ing and us­ing larger nee­dles, pick up and knit 59 (63, 67, 71, 77) sts evenly along side edge be­tween mark­ers.

Beg with a WS (purl) row, work 7 rows in St st.

Dec 1 st at each end of next row, then [ev­ery 12 (10, 10, 8, 8) rows] 6 (8, 8, 8, 3) times and [ev­ery 6 rows] 0 (0,0, 2, 9) times—45 (45, 49, 49, 51) sts.

Work even un­til sleeve mea­sures 163/4 inches, end­ing with a RS row.

Change to smaller nee­dles; knit 4 rows.

Bind off all sts kwise.

Fin­ish­ing

Block pieces to mea­sure­ments. Neck Edg­ing With RS fac­ing, us­ing cir­cu­lar nee­dle, and beg at left shoul­der seam, pick up and knit 40 (42, 44, 46, 48) sts evenly along left front neck edge to cen­ter, 1 st at cen­ter, 40 (42, 44, 46, 48) sts along right front neck edge to shoul­der seam and 38 (38, 40, 40, 40) sts along back neck— 119 (123, 129, 133, 137) sts; pm for beg of rnd and join. Rnd 1: P39 (41, 43, 45, 47), p3­tog, purl to end of rnd. Bind off all sts kwise. Sew side and sleeve seams.
