Gauge

17 sts and 36 rows = 4 inches/10cm in garter st. To save time, take time to check gauge.

Spe­cial Tech­nique

But­ton­hole: Work but­ton­holes on Rows 8, 24 and 38 as fol­lows: K5, yo twice, k3­tog, knit to end. On fol­low­ing rows, knit to yo, kfb in yo, knit to end.

Cowl

With B, cast on 75 sts. Row 1 (WS): Knit. Cut B. Row 2 (RS): With D, *k1, sl 1; rep from * across. Row 3: Knit. Cut D. Row 4: With A, *k1, sl 1; rep from * across. Rows 5–13: Knit, work­ing But­ton­hole on Row 8. Cut A. Row 14: With B, *k1, sl 1; rep from * across. Row 15: Knit. Cut B. Row 16: With D, *k1, sl 1; rep from * across. Row 17: Knit. Cut D. Row 18: With C, *k1, sl 1; rep from * across. Rows 19–27: Knit, work­ing But­ton­hole on Row 24. Cut C. Row 28: With B, *k1, sl 1; rep from * across. Row 29: Knit. Cut B. Rows 30–45: Rep Rows 2–17, work­ing But­ton­hole on Row 38.

Bind off kwise.

Fin­ish­ing

Weave in ends. Wo­ven Stripes Cut 7 (11/2-yard) strands of yarn: 2 A,1 B, 2 C and 2 D.

Place cowl right side up with long edge toward you with but­ton­holes at right. Lo­cate down­ward-curv­ing garter “bump” clos­est to a but­ton­hole; counting that bump, move 3 down­ward “bumps” to the left, then fol­low bump to lower edge of cowl.

Beg with that bump and us­ing ta­pes­try nee­dle and D, *weave in and out of down­ward bumps to top edge of cowl, be­ing care­ful to stay in line. Move to left of wo­ven line, then weave in and out of upward bumps. Rep from * twice more (6 wo­ven lines).

Count 5 bumps to left of last wo­ven line, then weave 6 lines us­ing A.

Count 11 bumps to left of last wo­ven line, then weave 6 lines us­ing B.

Count 5 bumps to left of last wo­ven line, then weave 6 lines us­ing C.

Count 11 bumps to left of last wo­ven line, then weave 6 lines us­ing D.

Count 5 bumps to left of last wo­ven line, then weave 6 lines us­ing A.

Count 11 bumps to left of last wo­ven line, then weave 6 lines us­ing C. Weave in ends. Sew but­tons op­po­site but­ton­holes about 1/4 inch from edge or to de­sired fit.

Block lightly.
